What this service is

Capital Gains Tax HQ is an independent reference publishing a record of how US taxing authorities treat a capital gain, and an introduction service to tax advisers. What it prints is what those authorities have written, reproduced exactly, attributed and dated. It is not a tax adviser, it does not tell anyone what to do, and it has no relationship with the IRS or any state agency.

How we are paid

No adviser can pay us to be named on this site, to be linked from it, or to be placed above anyone else: there is no sponsored slot on any page. An adviser who receives an enquiry pays a flat fee for the enquiry itself, never a share of what they charge you and never a percentage of any refund or saving, and no quotation, absence or ordering on this site depends on who pays.

Using the capital gains record

The record may be reused freely so long as it is credited. Cite the jurisdiction, the authority, the date printed beside the cell, and a link to the page you took it from; reproduce the authority's sentence rather than our arrangement of the matrix. Copyright in the quotations rests with the bodies that published them, and they appear here for reporting and comment.

No warranty

Every quotation is taken from an official page on the date shown, and authorities change their guidance. A quotation is also not the whole of the law: guidance is not statute, it does not bind a court, and it cannot know the facts of your case. Read the linked source and take advice before acting. The service is provided as is, without warranty; nothing here is tax, legal or financial advice.
